Workout Log: 29 January 2017
Last time I went out on a training run, I did one loop of Milagra Ridge, where a loop begins at the trailhead on Sharp Park road, goes all the way down to the other trailhead in Pacifica, then up to the summit, and back to the start. That, plus the transit time to/from my apartment, came in at just over 4.5 miles. Today I went for two loops, and I extended the loop to go all the way down to Highway 1. I'm going to hurt like a motherfucker tomorrow. Shit, I already do. Ouch.
Distance: 8.06 miles
Calories burned: 2253[1]
Total Time: 2:18.49
Ascent: 1821 ft.
Take what I did today and multiply that by 3. That's basically one day of Atacama, although I don't think it includes over a mile of vertical ascent. The majority of the course is flat, but the parts that aren't are probably hellacious.
According to the GPS/biometric data I hit it pretty hard. It's telling me that I need 99(!) hours to fully recover. I can only imagine what it's going to say at the end of 155 miles.
Interestingly, I wasn't that much slower on the second lap than on the first - just under 51 minutes on lap 1, and just under 53 minutes on lap 2. I doubt that a third lap would have been just under 55; I was pretty gassed at the end of the second lap, plus I was out of water, so when I do actually decide to try 3 laps of this, I'm going to need to bring at least two bottles or a Camelbak. Maybe even some food.
In other happenings, I think I need to try some different shoes, or maybe get the same pair in a wider width. My left pinky toe was getting too well-acquainted with the inside of my shoe on the downhill stretches, and it looks like I've got a small blister in the early stages of forming. Boo. It might also have something to do with the socks I'm wearing - I picked up a pair of toe socks, which are great for keeping my toes from blisterizing each other, but because now they're splayed out a little instead of compacted, I have different problems. At least I'm figuring this all out now.
I think I've earned some carbs tonight. Bring on the sushi. ↩︎
